Metalic Fragment Embolism form the Aortic Arch to the Popliteal Artery

Abstract
This case report involves a fragment which entered the aortic arch through a wound in the
anterior, left, upper chest and embolized by the aorta to the right popliteal artery and this is the
greatest distance of embolization.
The association of gunshot or fragment wound of the chest or abdomen with sudden pain or
ischemia in one of the extremities is typical of this complication.
This case had had only mild pain of the right leg without a ishemia effect and a delayed embo
lectomy was done because of the collateral circulation in some degree.
If the missile is not seen on chest or abdominal roentgenograms and there is a point of entrance
and no wound of exit, suspicion of peripneral embolization should be aroused.
In reviewing the literature, the high incidence of resultant gangrene of the affected extremity is
pointed out and the necessity of early diagnosis and prompt management stressed.
